Ironically, most people who are suffering from energy poverty are the most exposed to our biggest source of energy: the sun.
I/we develop and build solar concentrators designed to meet the basic energy needs (heat) for the billions of people who depend on biomass.
Billions of people around the world cook with wood or charcoal and it is causing a myriad of problems: deforestation, desertification, maternal health, high infant mortality, under-education, economic drag etc. Solar cooking is an excellent solution that has the potential to empower people to sustainably raise themselves out of poverty by providing access to the energy required to build wealth.
Energy makes the world go round, after all.
I’m a bit of a renewable energy/design ninja. My family operates a Canadian not for profit called ASTRA – Agency for Solar Technology Research and Application, I am an independent contractor for hire on creative R&D projects of all kind, and am pulling together a plan to take Solar Fire technologies to Haiti to show what solar powered business can do even (especially) in the poorest country in the western hemisphere.
This blog is a collection of interesting items that are informing my perspective as well as a forum for me to lay out the plan for those interested.
Consider this an open invitation to collaboration! If you are interested in developing/implementing/promoting the most cost effective, appropriate and open source solar thermal technology please get in touch with me at lorin dot symington at gmail dot com.
